The Challenge

The fitness and leisure sector in the UK was under immense pressure to accelerate its digital transformation. The onset of COVID-19 had heightened the urgency for improved digital capabilities in customer acquisition, retention, and overall profitability, with many organisations lagging behind.

Our approach

In partnership with industry leaders, Rewrite Digital embarked on the ‘Digital Futures’ consultation initiative starting in 2021. They conducted comprehensive evaluations across over 200 organisations, utilising more than 40 metrics across five distinct categories to measure digital effectiveness. This process involved in-depth interviews and reviews, aiming to understand and enhance each organisation’s digital customer experience.

Results

The concerted efforts yielded substantial progress:

  • Increased Participation: From 44 organisations in 2021 to 204 in 2023, showing a significant rise in engagement.
  • Enhanced Digital Maturity: The sector’s average digital score improved to 47%, with repeat participants achieving a 57% score, reflecting a 4% increase from previous assessments.
  • Ongoing Collaboration: Rewrite Digital continues to work closely with UK Active, Sport England, and individual organisations to drive forward the digital advancement of the sector into 2024 and beyond.
