Challenges

How do you grow a club that's already at capacity?

With membership at capacity and a waiting list extending beyond six years, Goodwood needed a strategy that would create new opportunities for growth without diminishing the value of its existing membership. The challenge was to identify new audience segments, understand their motivations and develop propositions that would broaden appeal while protecting the prestige of the established club.

Approach

Using audience insight to create a scalable membership strategy.

Growth Animals identified and tested potential customer personas, including lookalike audiences, existing followers and wider motorsport fans. Through focus groups, interviews, surveys, digital data and social listening, the agency validated audience demand and tested potential membership benefits and pricing.

The research informed the development of an audience segmentation model, grouping customers by meaningful behaviours and motivations to identify the most valuable target audiences. From this, Growth Animals created a tiered membership strategy with a refreshed brand architecture, differentiated propositions and pricing structure. Targeted marketing activity was then developed to guide audiences from awareness and email sign-up through to membership and renewal.

Results

A scalable membership strategy delivering long-term growth.

The project resulted in the creation of new membership tiers, supported by a refreshed umbrella brand and an elevated positioning for the existing membership to avoid cannibalisation.

Within the first 18 months, the programme delivered 10,000 new members, generated more than £1 million in revenue, achieved a 95% retention rate, and grew the Goodwood estate email database to more than 60,000 contacts.
